Blood Pressure MedicationHigh blood pressure is a serious condition that can lead to heart disease, heart attack, kidney failure, vision loss and stroke. Lifestyle changes such as losing weight, getting more exercise, eating better and quitting smoking are often needed in addition to taking blood pressure medication. A common blood pressure medication is diuretics. These water pills dilate arteries allowing blood to flow more freely, increase urine output and decrease blood volume which reduces blood pressure. Diuretics are used for mild high blood pressure. Beta-blockers are another common blood pressure medication. Beta-blockers reduce the heart rate and decrease the pressure caused by the heart contracting. This medication is used for people with heart disease, angina and those who have had a heart attack.
